Weekend Trips

There is more to do in San Miguel and the surrounding area than can fit in a month! Use your free time to explore. There's lots to see!

Just about anything is within a day's bus ride. For longer trips, there are overnight luxury buses that are comfortable enough to sleep on.

Check out some typical excursions:

Archeological Sites: The Pyramids at Teotihuacan, consisiting of the Pyramids of the Sun and of the Moon, and the Atlantean Figures at Tula are about 3 hours away. This is a good trip to take if you are interested in seeing Mexico City.

The Beach: Puerto Vallarta, Ixtapa, Zihuatenejo

The Cities: Mexico City and Guadalajara are each about 4 hours away, while Guanajuato is an hour and Queretaro is only 45 minutes from San Miguel.

Unique sights: Pena de Bernal, some of the best rock climbing in the world!  Patzcuaro, an incredibly vibrant Indian town. Sierra Gorda, 1,200,000 acre ecological tropical rainforest Reserve which boasts Jaguars, Pumas, Bears, Monkeys and is a prime example of adaptive evolution  (about 4 hours from San Miguel, has eco-tourism facilities, and is run by a fellow Ashoka member.)

Rental car services can become quite economical if the cost is shared (though you don't need a car in San Miguel). There are also commercial tours. Leon Airport connects to various beach resorts for your long weekend (4 week rotators). Typically, $200 buys a round trip ticket anywhere in Mexico (Cancun, Acapulco, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Ixtapa/Zihuatenejo, Huatulco, Cabo San Lucas).

The Program may be able to arrange for some of these trips cheaper than you could find otherwise, so ask!

NOTE: The program requires a minimum of 35 contact hours per week. Some trips away may require that you "make up" the time, which can be arranged with prior consent and arrangements with both the Spanish teacher and the clinical coordinator
