NICOLE MANCHA, MD (April 10 - May 4, 2007)  Dr. Mancha is a PGY3 Emergency Medicine Resident at Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago.  She is an alumna of MedSpanish, having spent time with us in San Miguel de Allende in 2003 as a medical student, and is now rotating at our site in La Paz, Baja California.  Nicole is working daily with Lilia, who is based in San Miguel, via Skype's interactive internet phone program, and is having fun building on her Spanish language skills through this innovative technology.

MARTIN PETERS (May 7 - June 1, 2007) Although he's not even in medical school yet, Martin has a lot of clinical experience under his belt.  From Newberg OR, Martin is a member of the Mt. Hood Ski Patrol, where he and his team are responsible for emergency first response on the mountain.  He also volunteers in a clinic for the homeless, does HIV counselling and testing in the gay community, and works with homeless, at risk and disabled youth in Adventures Without Limits, an outdoor education/therapy program in Portland.  He fits right in as a third rider with the Cruz Roja ambulance team here in San Miguel, on their calls to motor vehicle accidents and other emergencies.  He and his girlfriend, Crystal, are serious Spanish students, and are making great progress with Blanca and Lilia.  Martin plans to work with the homeless in Peru next month, where his medical Spanish should come in handy!  He'll be applying to medical school this year.

DON AND DIANA McGUIRK (May 19 - June 10, 2007) are a husband and wife pediatrician and ob/gyn nurse practitioner team from Denver CO, where as much as 40% of their patients are Spanish speaking. The McGuirks are rotating through the outpatient clinic, and are enjoying their interactions with patients as they work on their newly honed Spanish skills. They hope to return to the US with an enhanced appreciation of Mexican culture and belief systems, and plan to continue to work in international health after they leave San Miguel. As Diana put it, ¨Our MedSpanish experience will help to make us true world citizens.¨

BEN AND NICK BRALOVE (June 9 - July 21), a pair of talented brothers from Chevy Chase MD, are participating in the Jr. PACE Corps program for pre-clinical students this summer. Ben, a pre-med student at Cornell, and Nick, who will be a freshman at Emory in the fall, both have EMT certification and came to us with strong Spanish skills. They are riding with the Red Cross ambulance corps and making huge strides in their Spanish. Ben recently gave an impressive hour long Power

Point presentation on brain and spinal cord trauma (in Spanish!) to a group of Mexican medical colleagues. Both are a welcome addition to San Miguel´s social scene.

Clinical Rotation

JOHANNA MOORE (March 26 - April 20, 2007), a fourth year medical student at the University of Minnesota, is working in the Emergency Department of the General Hospital in San Miguel de Allende.  She is also making great progress in her daily two hour Spanish classes with Lilia.  Johanna is staying in her own apartment at Casa de los Soles, close to the center of San Miguel, the Mercado de los Artesanias, and the MedSpanish offices.  Johanna  enjoyed a  visit to Dr. Noe Arrellano's Emergency Room in Dolores Hidalgo, which they highly recommend to future EM rotators.  She will begin her residency in July at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, where she expects to be able to use her Spanish language and cultural awareness skills on a daily basis.
