Our Home State of Guanajuato

San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato City and Dolores Hidalgo.

MedSpanish began in San Miguel de Allende. Recently declared a UNESCO world heritage site, prepare to be dazzled by it’s near constant sun and clear blue skies.  The birthplace of Mexican Revolution, it’s also a cultural mecca in Mexico.

In San Miguel, and its neighboring cities of Guanajuato, Dolores Hidalgo, and San Luis la Paz, we provide the highest quality of Medical Spanish, International Health, Cultural Awareness training while working at developing the medical infrastructure.

San Miguel is a colonial gem, perched above the Laja River, where the vibrant yellow, orange, purple and fuchsia bougainvillea bloom year round.  It has an approximate population of 100,000 people and is popular vacation site for US and Canadian citizens.  Colonial architecture in tawny hues, narrow cobblestone roads lined with colorful houses lead to the town square.

Declared a national monument in 1926, strict regulations manage the new buildings, preserving the integrity and character of the town.
San Miguel's charm will enchant visitors for years to come, making this city a wonderful place to participate in the most delightful aspects of Mexican culture.

Celebrated as an artists' community, San Miguel has a diverse array of art galleries and artisan shops.  It’s home to two famous art schools, Bellas Artes and the Instituto Allende, which attract the world's best artists and craftspeople. The city pops with cultural activity, hosting numerous festivals each year, such as Day of the Dead, Independence Day and the most elaborate Easter celebration this side of the Vatican and Jerusalem. There is a world famous chamber music festival in the summer, a fall jazz festival, and a classical music festival during the winter holiday season. The state hosts the world famous Cervantino Festival in October (in the city of Guanajuato), and has been graced with the Bolshoi Ballet, among others

Visitors also find a confluence of Mexico's best shopping here.  The restaurants are plentiful and delicious, encompassing a variety of international cuisines. It is, in fact, pleasantly surprising that the quaint city has such a wide assortment of fine dining.  An active nightlife rules the night with an eclectic assortment of live music.
Finally, day trips abound.  On the outskirts of town, there are therapeutic hot springs in rustic caves.  Nearby towns, such as Dolores Hidalgo, which is known for ceramics, the pre-columbian ruins of Teotihuacan, which includes the largest pyramid in the world and indigenous artisan towns, such as Patzcuaro, are just within reach.
Although the foreign influence can be felt, San Miguel is a Mexican community and has not become too Americanized. It is this unique blend of cultures, friendly to tourists and Americans, making San Miguel especially suited for our development projects.  Because of their welcoming attitude, San Miguel is a rewarding place to practice medicine. Guanajuato City and Dolores Hidalgo, quite close to our main center, have few expatriates, offering excellent alternatives to San Miguel.

San Miguel is easily explored on foot.  If not, taxi rides are inexpensive ($2 U.S.). For longer excursions, first class buses are comfortable and inexpensive too.

The airport in Leon, Guanajuato, is a small, full capacity, international airport with direct flights from Dallas (American), Houston (Continental), Chicago (Aero Mexico), and the Bay Area. It is a scenic hour into San Miguel.  We are also accessible through Mexico City, often a bit cheaper airfare but with a bit more connection hassle, (i.e., a 4+ hour bus ride).
